The 10th annual Marketing Hall of Legends has presented 5 nominees for the coveted Marketer on the Rise award. 1. Who is Brad Canario?

I was born in Toronto and grew up in the suburbs (Richmond Hill) with my parents and younger brother Eric. While I was in school, my dad always encouraged me to captivate my audience (either in my writing or my storytelling) by striking the right emotional chord that would resonate with them. Today, as a marketing professional, his advice couldn’t be more relevant.

2. When and why did you decide to become a marketing professional?

I have always had a passion for business and, specifically, marketing. When I was in my second year of university, I was recommended by Kim Snow (marketing professor at York University) to attend the Queens Marketing Association Conference (QMAC). I had the opportunity to hear Tony Chapman present the keynote presentation on opening night and his story about how he got into the industry and all the great work he had accomplished really ignited my passion. If it weren’t for the encouragement from Kim, and Tony’s enthusiasm for the industry, I probably wouldn’t be where I am today.

3. What are you most passionate about?

a) In life – Snowboarding! I lose myself every time I’m on the slopes and come back to reality refreshed and ready to take on the next challenge.
b) In work – Innovation! Pushing myself, my team and the industry to think differently and find new ways to engage with consumers.

4. What is your proudest accomplishment in your career to date?

Winning the Bronze Medal in the 2012 Young Lions Marketing competition during the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity. Representing the great Canadian marketing talent pool on the international stage was an honour and I owe it to the Legends before me who have helped mold all us mentees.

5. The Marketer on the Rise award is the highest award given to a Mid-Level marketer in Canada. What would this award mean to you?

This award would reflect the great mentorship, advice and experience I have been fortunate enough to have in my career. As a form of paying it forward, I would look to pass on the wisdom that I have received with the intention to inspire and help develop the next generation of marketers so they, too, can become Marketers on the Rise.
