Marketing Talent Announces first of kind Scholarship

Toronto, February 01, 2018 — The American Marketing Association’s Toronto chapter (AMA Toronto) in partnership with Marketing Talent Inc. is launching a unique educational scholarship focused on LGBTQ applicants and other marginalized groups seeking careers in marketing communications.

The new AMA Toronto Marketing Talent Scholarship joins a handful of existing educational scholarships in Canada that give special consideration to the LGBTQ community and becomes the first of its kind in the marketing communications sector. The annual scholarship aims to recognize and reward outstanding university students pursuing a career in marketing.

“The AMA is proud to be launching a meaningful initiative that will build and enrich the Toronto marketing community,” says Mark Vecchiarelli, president, AMA Toronto. “The AMA Toronto Marketing Talent Scholarship sends an important message to students and businesses that marketers today want a diversity of employees on their team.”

The AMA Toronto Marketing Talent Scholarship will recognize up to three LGBTQ-identified individuals or applicants from other marginalized groups and provide $1,500 to help pay for school expenses. The recipients will share a common commitment to their schools and larger communities, and have demonstrated academic excellence and strong leadership qualities through their extracurricular involvement and work experience.

“Creating a scholarship to help attract high-caliber but marginalized youth into careers in marketing is perhaps the best way for a staffing and recruitment company to address the issues of diversity and inclusion in the industry,” says Craig Lund, president of Marketing Talent Inc., a North American marketing staffing and recruitment firm with offices in Canada and the United States.

“The AMA was a natural partner to develop the annual scholarship given its progressive views on talent development and its heritage in mentoring and education.”

Lund has been on the AMA Toronto board of directors for 10 years and was president from 2011 to 2014. He is currently the Co-chair for the AMA Toronto Mentor Exchange program which he has lead for the past seven years.

The new scholarship builds on AMA Toronto’s well-known mentoring and education programming and monthly events, as well as its long-standing partnership with the Schulich School of Business at York University. Notably, working with the Schulich Executive Education Centre, the association operates the AMA Toronto Mentor Exchange program that pairs 50 mid-career marketing and business executives together with 50 top industry veterans.

The AMA Toronto Marketing Talent Scholarship will be accepting applications this spring and award winners will be honoured in the summer.

Interested students can sign up to be notified when the application period opens.
